Microsoft Lync Server 2013 : Mediation Server Administration

3/14/2014 4:45:04 AM

Administration of the Mediation Server role in Lync Server 2013 can be performed through a combination of the Lync Server Control Panel and the Lync Server Management Shell. This section discusses management of Mediation Server services.

Services

Installing a Mediation Server in Lync Server 2013 creates only a minimal number of Windows services. The following services will be visible within the Services MMC after the Mediation Server installation:

• Lync Server Centralized Logging Service

• Lync Server Mediation Server

• Lync Server Replica Replicator Agent

• SQL Server (RTCLOCAL)

• SQL Server Agent (RTCLOCAL)

Note

The SQL Server Agent services are installed, but set to disabled.

The Lync Management Shell can also be used to check the current service status. Open the Lync Management Shell and run the following command:

Get-CsWindowsService -ExcludeActivityLevel

Review the status report:

Status      Name
------      ----
Running     REPLICA
Running     RTCCLSAGT
Running     RTCMEDSRV

Lastly, the state of a Mediation Server can always be viewed through the Lync Server Control Panel. To check the status of a Mediation Server Pool, perform the following steps:

1. Open the Lync Server Control Panel.

2. Click Topology.

3. Highlight the server in question and click Properties.

4. Make sure that the green play button appears in the Service Status column. A red square indicates that a required service is not running.

Topology Status

A relatively easy method of checking the health status of a Mediation Server or pool exists through the Lync Server Control Panel. To check the status of a Mediation Server Pool, perform the following steps:

1. Open the Lync Server Control Panel.

2. Click Topology.

3. Highlight the server in question and view the Replication column. A green check mark indicates that the Mediation Server has an up-to-date copy of the topology. A red X indicates that it does not have the most recent topology change.

The Lync Management Shell can also be used to validate the topology status. Open the Lync Management Shell and run the following command:

Get-CsManagementStoreReplicationStatus -ReplicaFQDN MEDIATIONSERVER.companyabc.com

Check for the UpToDate parameter to report true:

UpToDate               : True
ReplicaFQDN            : MEDIATIONSERVER.companyabc.com
LastStatusReport       : 9/8/2012 3:34:09 PM
LastUpdateCreation     : 9/8/2012 3:34:06 PM

Services Management

Managing the Lync Server services is fortunately about the extent of administration involved with a Mediation Server after it’s installed and configured. However, Enterprise Voice requires a fair bit more administration.

Administrators can start, stop, or drain the Mediation Server services either from the Lync Server Control Panel or from the Lync Server Management Shell. Stopping the services ends all user sessions, but draining the services allows existing connections to continue but prevents new connections from being accepted. This enables an administrator to prepare a server for maintenance.

To manage the Lync Server services, perform the following steps:

1. Open the Lync Server Control Panel.

2. Click Topology.

3. Highlight the server to be modified.

4. Click Action and select one of the following: Start All Services, Stop All Services, or Prevent New Connections for All Services.

5. Alternatively, double-click the server to drill down further and manage the individual services.
