CorelDraw 10 : Moving Objects

5/26/2013 7:30:12 PM

CorelDraw 10 provides three ways for you to reposition objects: dragging, nudging (pressing the arrow keys), or entering different page coordinates.

To move an object by dragging:

  • With the Pick Tool selected, click anywhere within the object and drag it to its new location. (When using the Pick Tool, it isn't necessary to select the object before you start dragging.)

  • With another tool selected (such as the Rectangle Tool), click to select the object and then—with the pointer over the x in the center of the object (Figure 1)—click and drag it to its new location.

Figure 1. When dragging with any tool other than the Pick Tool, you must position the pointer over the x in the object's center and then drag.

To move an object by nudging:

1.
Select the object with the Pick Tool or another tool.

2.
Press , , , or to move the object the preset nudge distance.

To move the object a fraction of the nudge distance, press in combination with an arrow key. To move the object a multiple of the nudge distance, press in combination with an arrow key.

To move an object using coordinates:

1.
Select the object with the Pick Tool or another tool.

2.
On the property bar (Figure 2), enter values for the X (horizontal) and/or Y (vertical) coordinates. The values refer to the object's center.

Figure 2. To precisely position an object, enter X and Y coordinates in these two boxes on the property bar.

3.
Press .

Tip

  • You can modify the default nudge distances in the Rulers section of the Options dialog box (Figure 3).

Figure 3. You can set the nudge, micro nudge, and super nudge distances in the Rulers section of the Options dialog box.

Moving objects via drag-and-drop

While the object moves discussed on the previous page were made within a drawing, you can also move objects between documents. CorelDraw 10 is drag-and-drop enabled. That is, you can move an object from one document to another using a drag-and-drop operation.

To move an object between documents:
1.
Open two documents.

2.
Choose Window > Tile Vertically or Window > Tile Horizontally.

3.
Using the Pick Tool, drag an object from one document to the other (Figure 4).

4.
Release the mouse button when the object is in the proper position.

Tips

  • You can use the Copy and Paste commands to copy objects in one CorelDraw 10 document and paste them into another.

  • Moving an object between documents is a destructive procedure, similar to a Cut. Rather than move the object, you may prefer to perform a drag-and-drop copy. Right-click the object and drag it from one document into the other. When you the mouse button is released, a pop-up menu appears (Figure 5). Choose the Copy Here command.

Figure 5. If you right-click and then drag an object between documents, you can elect to move or copy the object.

Selecting with the Tab Key

When working with several objects that are close together or on top of each other, it can be difficult to click the object you want to select. So use the keyboard to select the correct object. Begin by selecting an object and then repeatedly press until the desired object is selected. (As you press , watch the status bar. It will give you information about the location and type of object that is currently selected.)
